FULTON FIVE HANDICAP 8 OCTOBER 2022

FULTON FIVE HANDICAP 2022

On a glorious autumn morning, ten (yes, ten) runners turned out for the Fulton Five, the first race in what will hopefully be a full complement of races for the club’s 2022/23 handicap series.  While appreciative of the fact that a number of club members may have had pre-arranged family or work commitments, or may not even have been aware that a handicap was on, while others may have felt that a five-mile run at this stage in their running was a step too far, it is nonetheless difficult to understand how or why a club with over one hundred members struggled to muster ten runners for a club race.

In the race itself, victory went to Tommy Linton in a corrected time of 38:53.  Tommy was the fifth runner to start but gradually made up ground on those runners who set off before him and eventually came home a comfortable winner ahead of Michelle McIntosh and Eddie Finn, who finished in second and third place respectively in corrected times of 42:16 and 47:24.  This was Eddie’s first club race for some considerable time and it was good to see him back on the road again.  Of the rest of the runners, Lee Clements ran the fastest time of the day, finishing in fourth place in a corrected time of 34:14.  Emmett Woods, with a corrected time of 35:43, was the second fastest finisher, while Charlotte English’s corrected time of 36:59 was both the third fastest on the day and the fastest time posted by a female runner.  Jackie Wallace, whose last minute decision to run ensured a double figure start list, brought up the rear in a time of 48:35.  Full details of the times and places of all the runners are set out in the separate table.

Finally, thanks to Rhonda and Jackie Wallace for the tea and refreshments; to Diane for organising the prizes; to Denise for help with the timing; to Billy for standing around talking (his excuse this year for not running was bronchitis) and for being the person who make you feel better about your own running by being the someone who is always worse off than you; to the supporters who turned out to offer words of encouragement; and, most importantly, thank you to the ten runners who made the occasion worthwhile.
